OWATONNA—Joey Kalan, son of Pete and Kelly Kalan, is the Owatonna Rotary Club’s Student of the Month for May. Kaitlin Cole, daughter of Steve and Joliann Cole, is the Club’s Top Team Student for May. Kalan is a senior at Owatonna High School. Cole is a junior at OHS.
Kalan is a four-year participant in both hockey and tennis. He has sung in the school choir for four years and is a two-year member of the National Honor Society. He has served as a Youth Hockey mentor for two years. In 2005, he was a Rotary Club-sponsored student to Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) in Hudson, Wisconsin.
At Bethel Baptist Church, Kalan has served on the youth leadership committee and been a Wednesday night worship leader. For four years, he has taken part in church mission trips to the Vermillion Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota.
Kalan is employed at Martin’s Cycling and Fitness. For college, he will attend Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, most likely majoring in history.
Cole has participated in the OHS Link Crew and has managed the boys hockey team. She has long-term involvement with the Girl Scouts and has served the local chapter as vice-president and president.
Currently, Cole is employed as a manager at McDonald’s. For college, she is considering the University of Minnesota, Mankato, with a possible major in business.
Both students received special recognition at the Rotary Club luncheon at the Holiday Inn on May 22.
