March Students of the Month 2006

OWATONNA—Rebekah Holmes, daughter of Jeffrey and Sandra Holmes of Blooming Prairie, and Elizabeth Kern, daughter of Ken and Lisa Kern of Ellendale, are the Owatonna Noon Rotary Club’s Students of the Month for March.

Ryan Gallagher, son of Tim and Judy Gallagher of Owatonna, is the Rotary Club’s Top Team Student for March.

All three are seniors at Owatonna High School.

Holmes has played five years of varsity soccer and captained the team in 2005-06.  She is a four-time all Big Nine Conference performer.  She is also a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in Knowledge Bowl.  In addition, she has worked with Peer Helpers, Link Crew, and SHOC (Students Helping Others Choose).  In 2005, she was the Rotary Club’s sponsored student to the University of Wisconsin—Whitewater’s World Affairs Seminar.  She is currently employed by K-Way in Owatonna.

For college, she is considering the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Macalester College in St. Paul.

Kern has played four years of volleyball, captaining the team in 2005-06 and being named all-conference three times.  She also has played hockey for three years, with two all-conference recognitions.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in SHOC.  She is a four-year FFA participant and is currently chapter president.  She was a member of the dairy judging team that placed first in American national competition and that represented the United States in international competition in Scotland last year.  She has also been active in 4-H and as a Junior Dairy Ambassador.

At Sacred Heart Catholic Church, she is a choir member, lector, and Eucharistic minister.  She works on her family farm, Kerncrest Holsteins, and also owns her own small dairy herd.

Kern will be attending the University of Minnesota at Crookston, which has awarded her a volleyball scholarship.  Her intended major is education.

Gallagher played football for two years at OHS.  He has also been active as a Peer Helper and in Youth Service Leadership.  He is currently employed at Pizza Ranch.

For college, he plans to attend either the University of Minnesota at St. Cloud or Mankato State, majoring in psychology.

All three students attend Rotary Club weekly luncheons at the Holiday Inn and will receive special recognition at the March 20 meeting.
